We wanted to relay this information from the statewide Lift Our Kids Coalition regarding the history and impact of racism on welfare programs and policies in this country.
First is this reading list compiled by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, of books and articles on the racist history underlying the current Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and its precedessor, the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program.
To this list they would add:
- Neubeck, Kenneth and Noel A. Cazenave, Welfare Racism, Routledge, 2001.
- Bell, Winifred, Aid to Dependent Children, Columbia University Press, 1965.
This second reading list, compiled by the Economic Security Project, looks at how the enduring myth of the “Welfare Queen” has negatively impacted our culture and politics.
