Yesterday the New York Times reported on a homeless soccer team: Homeless Team Roots for New Life Through Soccer. The idea of a homeless soccer team initially made me nervous, because I wonder how helpful it is to create organizations that help incorporate the status of homelessness into a person’s identity. (I think it must be harder to move out of homelessness if part of your self-definition and identity is your homelessness.) But this soccer team seems to be about assisting people out of homelessness. It enables people in trouble to feel like winners, provides a valuable means of stress relief and gives people a healthy way to spend their time. It also provides community and a sense of purpose.
