The Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless is holding a legislative briefing next Wednesday, March 28th, and we need you to ask your Legislators to attend! The briefing, entitled The McKinney-Vento Homelessness Assistance Act in Massachusetts will be held from 10:30 am -12:00 pm in Hearing Room 437 in the State House. Please click here to see a flyer with more information on the briefing.
Sponsored by Representatives James O’Day, Theodore Speliotis, Thomas Stanley, and Education Committee Co-Chairs Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz and Representative Alice Peisch, the briefing will explain the role of the McKinney-Vento Act in ensuring that students experiencing homelessness have access to a stable, quality education.
The briefing will also detail the efforts underway to secure $11.3 million in funding in the FY’13 budget to offset the costs communities can incur while transporting students to and from school under certain provisions of the Act. Be sure to read our fact sheet to learn more about this budget initiative.
It’s critical that Legislators understand how important the McKinney-Vento Act is to students who are experiencing homelessness. Contact your State Representative and State Senator today and ask them to attend next week’s briefing!
