More on “A House for the Homeless” Benefit Concert
The Friends of Hampshire County Homeless Individuals will purchase a house in Northampton that will provide permanent, supported housing for six chronically homeless individuals with a history of substance abuse who have demonstrated a commitment to sobriety. We are building on our initial, successful endeavor of this type, Yvonne’s House in Florence, where the Friends in 2008 purchased a 6-bedroom duplex, as a permanent affordable residence for six homeless people (rent limited to 30% of income).
For several years the Friends has been committed to Housing First, the movement to replace shelters with permanent housing whenever possible. National studies and experience show that the homeless often are more successful in rebuilding their lives if provided with stable housing right away, with outreach and support services provided at the same time, rather than waiting for permanent housing until after service interventions. As the saying goes, “Shelters don’t end homelessness – homes end homelessness.”
A number of local musicians have joined to perform music, not for their supper, but to help others regain the security of having their own home. Funds raised from benefits like this one will help purchase the house and pay for any necessary renovations and furnishings.
