On February 12, the State Senate passed its supplemental budget that closely mirrors the House version, providing $425 million to keep the shelter system funded through June, and includes:

  • capping the system at 4,000 families for the period Dec. 31, 2025 to Dec. 31, 2026 (there are currently just more than 6,000 families);
  • reducing the maximum length of stay from 9 to 6 months
  • requiring proof of MA residency and intent to stay in MA
  • requiring criminal background checks for all applicants
  • making temporary respite sites available to families that appear eligible for shelter for up to 30 days upon arrival in MA

The full Senate voted in favor, with the exception of all 5 Republican Senators and Democrat Senator John Velis.

Next the House and Senate versions will go to Conference Committee to work out differences before going to the Governor for signature.

As our region currently sees a rise in unsheltered family homelessness, the Network is deeply concerned about the potentially dire consequences these additional restrictions will have on our most vulnerable families and children.

Please find your state senator and state representative here to share your concern.
