On October 17, Governor Healey announced a dramatic shift in family shelter, effectively eliminating the right to shelter for children when the shelter capacity reaches 7,500 families (we’re at 7,100 now; predicted to reach 7,500 by the end of the month). This means families will be put on a “wait list.” We await further information about how this will be implemented, and the Network is in close conversation with statewide partners to ensure a coordinated response.
Meanwhile, the Working Group to Protect Migrant Families has released these two sign-on letters to push, in concert with Governor Healey’s efforts, the Biden Administration and Congress to take action to address this crisis. Please see here the letters (virtually identical) to the Administration and the MA Congressional delegation.
The Working Group includes Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless as well as partners from business, philanthropy, immigration, health care housing and direct services. The Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action (JALSA) is providing staffing for the Working Group.
