The time for us to act is now. The statewide eviction moratorium ends in just one week, on October 17. It is estimated that as many as 100,000 households are at risk of eviction, and those households will disproportionately be in communities of color that have already been hardest by COVID-19.
There is a comprehensive solution for tenants, landlords and homeowners: pass the Guaranteed Housing Stability Bill (H5018/S2813). Read this factsheet to learn more.
The Mass. Public Health Association’s Statewide Coronavirus and Equity Task Force, which includes this Network, has organized a Public Health Day of Action to Prevent Evictions this coming Tuesday, October 13th to call on our legislative leaders and Governor to take immediate action to prevent a looming public health catastrophe.
Here are the actions we can take by Tuesday morning, October 13, at 10 am:
- SIGN this letter to Prevent the Catastrophic Public Health Impacts of Evictions. You can sign as an organization or as an individual with your organization noted only for identification purposes – whatever you can do will make a difference. Make your voice heard!
2. Share this Action Alert with your Networks on Tuesday morning! It provides a script and phone numbers to call so we can move our legislators and our Governor to pass the Guaranteed Housing Stability bill.
3. Turn up the volume on social media! Use this social media toolkit to help create a buzz online to urge our legislative to take immediate action to prevent a tidal wave of evictions.
We need the state to act immediately to prevent the devastating effects of homelessness and housing instability, and the increased risk of contracting COVID-19 for our most vulnerable households and their communities as a whole.
We can and must do better. Let’s take a stand together for housing and racial justice.
