We have gotten word that the eviction moratorium bill is moving FAST at the State House, with a vote likely this week. Thanks to so many of our Western MA legislators for signing on in support of the House bill HD 4935. The Senate version is also in process (special thanks to Senator Comerford for her leadership on this).
We also know that some landlord groups are asking for amendments that could undermine the public health protections this legislation is intended to serve.
So our job is to press hard for passage of the strongest possible moratorium bill. Even if your legislator is a co-sponsor or supporter, still reach out! It is useful for them to be able to report on their constituents’ clamoring for passage.
Please email (better than phone calls right now) your state representative and senator AND House Speaker DeLeo and Senate President Spilka. A sample script:
“My name is _______ and I’m a Massachusetts resident [from] writing to ask you to support a strong moratorium on evictions and foreclosures. The Governor has issued a stay at home advisory to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus during this public health emergency. We thank the Speaker and Senate President for taking steps to recommend a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures. We request that you do everything in your power to quickly implement a strong moratorium that halts all evictions and foreclosures until this crisis is over. People cannot stay at home if they do not have a home to stay in. Thank you.”
