The National Alliance to End Homelessness has posted an interactive, web-based training that provides participants with an overview of how to find landlords and track and document the success of landlord outreach strategies, as well as tools for maintaining a partnership with landlords for the long-term. The training includes both an audio and visual component.

The training examines the topic of understanding landlords, including the types of landlords and their business interests.

It also covers how to initiate relationships, including finding and connecting with landlords.

Lastly, the training provides users with information on how to build and maintain partnerships with landlords.

Training Opportunity: Accessing Affordable Housing

The Massachusetts Law Reform Institute is presenting a training event on Accessing Affordable Housing in Boston on December 9, 2009, 9:30 am to 4 pm. The training is for community advocates, and legal, social services and health services staff. From the brochure:

Low-income housing is an increasingly scarce commodity in Massachusetts, and locating affordable housing is an activity that requires a combination of awareness, skill, and perseverance. This training focuses primarily on the rules and regulations governing access to public and subsidized housing programs. The training examines issues that advocates need to understand when helping poor individuals and families find housing. Using a combination of lecture, case study, and small group discussion, the faculty introduces participants to every stage of the subsidized housing application process.

Clare Deucher’s April 27 training on helping people who are homeless apply for SSI/SSDI has filled up. Clare has added another section on May 7, 2009, 9:30 am to noon, Springfield Office of Housing, 1600 E. Columbus Ave., Springfield, MA 01103.

Free SSI/SSDI training for case managers who work with people who are homeless

Clare Deucher, the Statewide HIV/Homeless Liaison for Disability Determination Services, will present a training about accessing Social Security disability benefits on Monday, April 27th from 9:30AM – Noon in Springfield. This free training is directed toward case managers who work with homeless clients.

Clare will offer clear and concise explanations of the Social Security benefit programs, basic eligibility factors, and the nuts and bolts of how to effectively access benefits for individuals who are homeless. Attendees will obtain a substantial amount of information through the oral presentation and printed materials. The training will allow ample time for Q&A.

Any case managers who are interested in attending this training on April 27th, should sign up with Lizzie Malave, the Housing Retention Coordinator for the City of Springfield, 413-787-6500 or lmalave@springfieldcityhall.com. Registration is limited to 25 case managers and will be held at 1600 E. Columbus Ave in Springfield.
