HUD-VASH program openings for homeless veterans
A Notice from the Northampton VA Medical Center:
Dear Providers,
The HUD-VASH program at the Northampton VAMC is now accepting a limited number of new applications.
HUD-VASH is a program that helps eligible homeless veterans find and retain stable independent housing. The program accomplishes this by partnering Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Section 8 vouchers with Veteran’s Administration Supportive Housing (VASH) case management services. Case management provides ongoing support and monitoring of VASH veterans in the community. It is meant to promote and foster the veteran’s growing independence, recovery, and success as they transition back to living in the community.
We will be accepting provider referrals only. Applications will be issued to providers by request. Both individuals and families can be accepted into HUD-VASH. If you are working with a veteran that you would like to recommend as an appropriate candidate for HUD-VASH, please consider submitting an application on his or her behalf. The following guidelines will help you to identify appropriate candidates:
Basic eligibility requirements are:
· Must be homeless according to the McKinney Act, Title 42, United States Code, Section 11302. See 38 USC 2002 (1). It is as follows:
o An individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence,
OR
o An individual who has a primary nighttime residence that is:
§ A supervised publicly or privately operated shelter designed to provide temporary living accommodations including welfare hotels, congregate shelters, and transitional housing for the mentally ill;
§ An institution that provides a temporary residence for individuals intended to be institutionalized; or
§ A public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
● Eligible and enrolled in the VA health care system
● Not on the lifetime registry as a sex offender
● In need of case management in order to achieve and maintain optimal functioning in the community.
For your reference, a successful HUD-VASH client is typically one who is:
· Willing and able to work collaboratively with case management and other service providers and follow treatment recommendations
· Motivated and capable of conducting a housing search
· Able to manage basic activities of independent living such as paying bills, cleaning house, food preparation, being medication compliant on his or her own, etc. (with case management support as needed)
· Sober from drugs and alcohol and participating in some form of relapse prevention or substance abuse treatment
· Engaged, or motivated to engage, in some kind of meaningful daily activity such as work, school, volunteer work, hobbies, etc.
In addition, the following documentation must be included with application:
· DD214
· Birth certificate
· Social security card
· Proof of income (award/benefit letter or employer letter. Check stubs cannot be accepted.)
HUD-VASH INFORMATION SESSIONS WILL BE HELD ON
TUESDAY, JANUARY 12 AND THURSDAY, JANUARY 14 FROM 3:00-4:00 P.M.
NORTHAMPTON VAMC, BUILDING 4 LOWER, ROOM 106.
THESE SESSIONS ARE OPEN TO BOTH PROVIDERS AND VETERANS.
A maximum of 50 applications will be accepted for consideration between January 12 and February 5. Incomplete applications will be returned. While we expect to have many qualified applicants, please be aware that there are a very limited number of openings. Applicants will be prioritized based upon need and ability to use and be successful in the program. Applying is not a guarantee of acceptance to HUD-VASH. If found eligible, the Veteran will be given a screening appointment. A final decision by the VASH admissions committee will then be made and the referring provider will be informed of the outcome.

Who would i talk to to get a app/ filled out? I’m a homeless vet. now.
The next round of HUD-VASH is not yet available, but will be in the next few months. To apply, contact any veterns’ organization in your area and ask about HUD-VASH–they should be able to refer you to the program.
Thank You Gerry McCafferty.

I’m Edward Cooper- the founder and president of vpac, veterans patients advocate committee. I have been ask by veterans too inquire about reason why a vet enroll into the hud- vash housing voucher program must have his or her home inspected every month by drug treatment counselor. Isn’t this a violation of veterans rights to reside at his or her own home, without the constant invasion of privacy, by those va medical health care operatives that want to treat all veterans with drug addiction problems with the same sterotype of outlook shown towards all veterans. There will always be this type of unjust treatment by va medical health care staff.
I am currently a homeless and dislocated veteran. I recently left my home state of Louisiana to hopefully find employment and housing in Dallas, Ft. Worth TX. I want to enroll in school and in the HUD-VASH in order to finish school. I don’t have any contacts here to assist me. Who and where do I need to go for help? I am working for a temporary service here, a couple days a week maybe but I don’t have anywhere to live to go to work .
Thank you

I would suggest contacting the local VA office–you can look them up on-line, or check the local phone book. HUD-VASH is a national program, but the folks who produce this blog are only active in Western Massachusetts.

Hello I am a OIF/OEF ERA DIS/VET residing north of Tampa, FL. 1/2 hr. I can no longer work my occupation as a roofer due to physical limitations but am interested in providing housing/camp sites for homeless veterans in transition. I have a 10 acre facility that would work great for this. I think this would be a good oppurtunity to provide a needed service and help me pay some bills as I have had no luck with employment due to my limitations and narrow scope of training within my industry(roofing since 1985). Any information as to how I could apply for this would be appreciated. I would also like to see if there would be a grant available to finish some improvements on the home prior to opening it for housing. Thank you for your help. David
Hello, I would like to get on Hud Vash. How do I go about doing that? Do you have housing in York Pa?
I would suggest contacting the local VA office–you can look them up on-line, or check the local phone book. HUD-VASH is a national program, but the folks who produce this blog are only active in Western Massachusetts.
recently I have apllied for the vash-hud program with my local VA, and a prgram social worker has recommended me to the the program, will or when will more vouchers be available, so I might have some Idea how long it will be for me on the waiting list.?
Yes upon whose discretion is the programs obligation fulfilled ?
I currently reside in SF, Ca. and I already have a HUD-VASH voucher. I am looking to move to Texas and tranfer my voucher there. Can someone please give me advice on how to transfer my voucher from SF, Ca. to Fort Worth, Tx. ?
Thanks so much

Does anyone know if Mark Zuckeberg has a private blog?
I would like to know if you could still help a person if they make to much money? I am staying at this place called US VETS…Can Hud Vash help me find a place?
I applied for Hud-vash begining of Feb.I was recently contacted by a case worker at the JBVA the other day. I was told that the waiting list is now closed and they do not have any vouchers and that I would have to re-apply. I was also given some phone numbers to get help from( which I have done so since dec 2011). Right now I am starting to feel like I am not getting any help I have been back in forth between the VA, VOA, VAC, and 311. All of which keep refering me to the other. This is really starting to take a toll on me emotionally and I don’t know how much more I can deal with.
My question is do I have to apply every month just to be to be placed on the waiting list just in case they get any vouchers?
Hello: I received this advice for you from the VA Medical Center in Northampton, MA (where we are based): “The only suggestions I would have for this veteran is to call the caseworker who contacted him to clarify his questions or if possible to go directly to the local medical center homeless program office and ask to speak with someone directly.” Best of luck.
