Food Stamp Use Soars, and Stigma Fades

On Sunday, November 29, The New York Times reported:

MARTINSVILLE, Ohio — With food stamp use at record highs and climbing every month, a program once scorned as a failed welfare scheme now helps feed one in eight Americans and one in four children.

Increases in food stamp use by counties in Western Massachusetts between 2007 and 2009 are as follows:  Hampden up 31%; Hampshire 41%, Franklin 42%, Berkshire 39%.  See the Times’ interactive map below for more detail.
